WEBSITE PLANNING

A clearer brief makes a better starting point.

You do not need a finished strategy document before speaking to a web designer. You do need a useful picture of your business, your audience and the job the website should do. A little preparation makes the first conversation more focused and the proposal easier to assess.

01

1. Define the next action

Choose the main action you want a visitor to take: request a quote, book a conversation, explore your work or buy a product. Explain who that person is and what they need to understand before taking that step. This helps the project focus on a useful journey.

02

2. Map the essential pages

List the information visitors need, then group it into pages. WordPress pages are suited to lasting content such as About, Services and Contact, and can be arranged into a hierarchy. Start with the essentials; give each page a clear purpose.

03

3. Gather the materials

Collect the assets you already have and identify gaps before the build.

  • Your logo and available brand files
  • Service or product information
  • Images you have permission to use
  • Contact details and important business policies
04

4. Share references with a reason

Bring a few websites you like and explain what appeals to you. A clear menu, confident typography or a simple enquiry path is more useful feedback than asking for an exact copy. References help communicate direction while leaving room for your own identity.

05

5. Identify practical requirements

Note any booking tools, payment providers, forms, existing content or migration needs. Separate the features needed for launch from ideas that can wait. This makes it easier to agree priorities and estimate the work.

06

6. Agree how decisions will be made

Choose who supplies content and who gives final feedback. Review the proposed scope, payment stages and handover before work begins. Keep the brief close during the project: it is a shared reference for deciding whether the website is doing the job you asked it to do.
